A little Self Restraint

We're eating too much meat - any chance of a portion of self restraint?

Lately the meat industry has gotten out of hand. Eric Davidson of the Woods Hole Research Centre advised that we must cut back on portion size and the quantity of meat we eat.

Not only to improve our own health and to keep our weight within normal standards, but mostly to reduce the amount of fertilizers that is used nowadays. These fertilizers release nitrous oxide that causes climate change. All the crops that need to be grown to feed all the animals, produce so much greenhouse gases that it has become very damaging for the environment.

To get a good view on how much our meat intake has grown, we can take a look at the burgers from McDonalds. In 1955 the first hamburger weighed 1.6 ounces, now the largest burger weighs eight ounces!

Because of eating a lot more meat, we damage the environment, more and more people become overweight, this mean a need for bigger clothes, cars, airplane seats, a drain on health services so on and so on. In the end our enormous intake of meat has even more enormous damaging results.
We really should take this in consideration and change our lifestyle. Unfortunately, nobody likes to be told what they can or cannot eat...

I think this article should a very interesting look on the way we are consuming nowadays. Most articles are talking about the fact that people are getting unhealthier and fatter, but indeed, how about the effects on the environment? It shows that the environment suffers from our enormous intakes as well. If you ask me, I think someting should be done, and fast! The only problem is; it's all about the money". As long as money can be earned by producing more and more food, it will stay this way and people will keep on consuming it...

  1. The effects on the environment are a big problem nowadays. I think we have to stop the biological industry. The way this animals are treatened is awfull. They are more susceptable for deseases I think the government has to start a big campaign or do something about the bio industry. We also need to banned battery cage egged.

  2. Global warming is a very serious problem and still a lot of people pretend nothing is wrong with our climate and that we can go on consuming as we are doing right now. People think that the use of green energy will solve all the problems, but as this article shows us, the causes for global warming are much bigger than just the carbo-dioxide from the cars and factories. The meat industries contribute to global warming as well, by producing large amounts of fertilizers.I think we can easily solve this problem by start eating insects. There are enough insects for everyone and it provides a large amount of protein.I think within a few decades people are used to the idea and we all eat Manipulated Grasshopper Cookies and Fried Flies Sandwiches.

  3. It ought to be controlled by the Government and there must be a different view on what aspect we can earn the money. We mustn't forget about the chickenmeat as well. We have used so many antibiotics in this industry that because of eating chicken (it's less fat than porkmeat) we could have a problem when getting ill and being in need of an antibiotic which won't work on your illness because of the antibiotics processed in chickenmeat. Less people living means also less taxpayers and therefore less money for the government.

  4. We can all help to reduce greenhouse gases by eating at least one vegetarian meal a week. I love eating meat, but I like a good vegetarian meal as much as one with meat. People don't just get fat by eating fat meat, we eat so much sugar like we have never done before in this 21ste century. Eating healthy fats via meat is good for us and people who lived like a 100 or 200 years ago ate loads of healthy fat and didn't have that much problems with obese people. In oder to prevent people from obese we can start by eating less meat, but it's just a start.
